Chatham takes page out of Lee County’s economic development playbook

Earlier this month, leaders of the Chatham County business community announced an ambitious goal – attracting 2,000 jobs and $500 million of capital investment by 2026.

The effort, called Accelerate 2026, is a public-private partnership that aims to raise $900,000 from the private sector, $751,250 of which had already been raised as of Oct. 6. That money will be used for marketing, improvements to the Chatham Economic Development Corporation website and to make sure Chatham County is part of national site selection events.

Goals include increasing the industrial and commercial tax base from 8 percent to 14 percent and creating a spec building program, the latter of which is expected to help the former. Leaders in Chatham County have watched a spec program in neighboring Lee County flourish.
