The Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is once again seeing an increase in the number of travelers passing through its gates. After a pandemic-induced dip in traveling in 2020, which cut the total number of passengers by more than half compared to 2019, the numbers are back on the rise.
The airport’s June numbers surpassed those of June 2019 by 19,000 travelers, marking the first 2021-over-2019 increase.
“We’ve been thrilled at the rebound that the vaccine has introduced,” said Stephen Green, Airport Commission chairman, “We’ve seen the best numbers we’ve had in the history of the airport as the economy begins to recover, so we’ve got our Master Plan back in action.”
Also last month, the airport received $17.6 million in federal grants for an apron expansion that is part of a new air cargo complex. With more passengers and expansions on the horizon, Savannah can expect to see growth in many forms.
